  27.  This document covers IMPORTANT material NOT contained in the user's guide.
  28.  Please read ALL of this information carefully! SEE THE NEW FEATURES section
  29.  for new features that are NOT covered in the help or documentation.

  31.  All Known Bugs Fixed
  32.  --------------------
  33.  Version 5.1 fixes all known bugs reported to us in the last 6 months.
  34.  Most importantly the CD ROM drive problem that some users reported has
  35.  been fixed.  The Password option has also been corrected, and your
  36.  cosmetic and functional suggestions have been implemented where possible.
  37.  Zip Manager now fully supports NTFS, see the new features section.

  39.  Important Installation Directions
  40.  --------------------------------- 
  41.  NOTE: The install program does NOT accept long directory names. Enter
  42.  a standard 8.3 DOS file name or accept the default directory. You can
  43.  always change the name after installtion.
  44.  
  45.  The Zip Manager program files are in compressed format, each file ends
  46.  with an _ character.  You must run the ZMSETUP program to expand them
  47.  before the program can be used. You must run ZMSETUP.EXE from the Windows
  48.  Program Manager.  Other shells like the Norton Desktop or PC Tools for
  49.  Windows are not 100% compatible with our setup program and may cause it to
  50.  fail when attempting to create the Zip Manager Group.
  51.  
  52.  Running The ZMSETUP Program
  53.  ----------------------------
  54.  1. From the Program Manager File Menu choose Run...
  55.  2. Enter the location of the ZMSETUP Program. If the files were on your
  56.     A: drive then you would enter: A:\ZMSETUP and press Enter or Click on
  57.     the OK button.
  58.  3. The Zip Manager setup dialog will be displayed.
  59.  4. The edit field will display a suggested directory.
  60.  5. Press OK to accept the default directory or enter new destination
  61.     directory and press Enter or Click on the OK button.
  62.  6. The setup program will create the directory for you and display
  63.     the file installation progress.
  64.  7. When it has finished expanding and copying the files it will create
  65.     a new Program Manager Group and add the program files to the group.
  66.     Now you can proceed with the next step.
  67.  
  68.  To Complete The Installation
  69.  ----------------------------
  70.  After the installation program is finished you MUST read the installation
  71.  section of the Users' Guide.  You will see its icon in the Zip Manager
  72.  group. You must setup the program's default directories, and configure
  73.  the program to work with your Virus Detection software.

  76.                     Important Information - Please Read These!
  77.  **************************************************************************

  79.  VERY IMPORTANT -> Please Note The Following:
  80.  ---------------------------------------------
  81.  THIS APPLIES TO DOS PKZIP USERS ONLY
  82.  Do NOT put the Zip Manager program files deep in a directory tree. Doing
  83.  so may make it impossible for Zip Manager to work with the DOS programs,
  84.  ARJ and PKZIP.  We suggest that you install Zip Manager in its own directory
  85.  off of the root directory.  c:\zipmgr, would be a good example.  ZMZIP and 
  86.  ZMUNZIP allow Zip Manager to compress and extract files in very deep 
  87.  directory trees.  However DOS programs are limited to 128 characters
  88.  at the VERY MOST for command line arguments.
  89.  
  90.  VERY IMPORTANT -> Please Note The Following:
  91.  ---------------------------------------------
  92.  Zip Manager creates its own temporary directory called zm5temp which it
  93.  uses to extract and store files. DO NOT use this directory, since all of
  94.  the files in it are deleted when Zip Manager ends.  We wanted to be sure
  95.  that you didn't set this as one of your default directories.
  96.  If you did all of your files would be gone when Zip Manager closed!
  97.  There was a bit of confusion about the usage of this directory and we
  98.  wanted to make sure  that you didn't lose any files accidently.
  99.  
  100.  VERY IMPORTANT -> Please Note The Following:
  101.  ---------------------------------------------
  102.  **** WARNING YOUR DATA MAY BE IN DANGER ****
  103.  Never add 2.04 format files to any Zip file created with the PKZIP
  104.  Version 1.10.  This is the old zip file format, and if you add a file
  105.  to a version 1.10 zip with either PKZIP 2.04g or Zip Manager you will
  106.  CORRUPT the Zip file and all other files in it will be unrecoverable.
  107.  We have had a few users report this unfortunate problem and we wanted
  108.  to make you aware of it again for your safety.  Zip Manager has an
  109.  easy to use convert option on the edit menu.  If you are NOT SURE
  110.  if a file was created with pkzip 1.10 or 2.04, then don't take a
  111.  chance!  Convert it to 2.04 format to be safe!
  112.  
  113.  This potential problem with backward compatibility was never
  114.  documented clearly with any other archive program.  We want your
  115.  data to be secure, so we felt it was worth re-documenting it here
  116.  for extra saftey.
  117.  
  118.  VERY IMPORTANT -> Please Note The Following:
  119.  ---------------------------------------------
  120.  If you have the recurse directories switch checked
  121.  and then select the root of your hard disk, Zip Mgr
  122.  will try to recurse and archive your entire drive!
  123.  There may be some instance where you would need to do
  124.  this but just be aware that you will also need to have
  125.  multiple volume switch set and have the target drive
  126.  as either A: or B:
  127.  
  128.  Important Note On Converting Files!
  129.  -----------------------------------
  130.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONVERT MORE THAN ONE FILE AT A TIME. When converting
  131.  a file from ZIP to ARJ or ARC to ZIP for example, you would force the
  132.  conversion process to open up more than one copy of PKZIP.  This can
  133.  easily RESULT IN SEVERE DATA LOSS.  The Zip Manager was designed to convert
  134.  only one file at time, so please be careful.
  135.  
  136.  MAPI.DLL Error Message Warning                 
  137.  ------------------------------
  138.  If you don't have an E-Mail program, or one that uses the Microsoft Mail 
  139.  API then the FIRST TIME Zip Manager starts you MAY get a message box that
  140.  says, "Error Can't Find MAPI.DLL"  TO DIABLE THIS ERROR MESSAGE:
  141.  
  142.  1. Start the windows Notepad program.
  143.  2. Type the following: NO MAIL
  144.  3. Choose Save from the File Menu.
  145.  4. Save the file in your Windows/System Directory with the name MAPI.DLL
  146.  5. Now when Zip Manager starts it will see this file and disable the
  147.    mail items on the menu and you will no longer get the error message.
  148.  
  149.  Maintenance Releases and Upgrades
  150.  ----------------------------------
  151.  All maintenance and minor version upgrades will be available ONLY on our
  152.  BBS. Since these releases will contain only the upgraded files it will
  153.  save you download time and keep the files on our board where they won't
  154.  inadvertently be downloaded as the complete program.

  160.  Complete NTFS File Support
  161.  --------------------------
  162.  Zip Manager now fully supports the NTFS file system and will handle both
  163.  long file names and long directory names.
  164.  
  165.  The Short & Long File Name Buttons On the Tool Bar
  166.  --------------------------------------------------
  167.  In order to allow you to easily create zip files for DOS
  168.  users Zip Manager has 2 buttons on the Tool Bar. Since
  169.  DOS PKUNZIP wouldn't know what to do with a long file
  170.  name or directory name and would report a corrupt zip
  171.  file.
  172.  
  173.  The L.___ Button Displays Long  File Names Only.
  174.  The S.___ Button Displays Short File Names Only.
  175.  
  176.  You can press the Short file name button and then be able to choose
  177.  the short file name to add the a zip file.  Now you can drag and drop
  178.  only short names into a zip destined for DOS users.
  179.  
  180.  VERY IMPORTANT -> Please Note The Following:
  181.  ---------------------------------------------
  182.  Express Mode and Alternate 8.3 Names
  183.  
  184.  Express Mode uses standard Windows List boxes, and as a result will
  185.  only see long file names, and normal DOS 8.3 short file names.
  186.  It will not be able to show you the alternate short file name created
  187.  by Windows NT.  You will need to use Manager Mode if you need to work
  188.  with alternate 8.3 names.
  189.  
  190.  NTFS Long Name Protection For DOS PKUNZIP
  191.  -----------------------------------------
  192.  If you accidently add a long file name to a zip file and then
  193.  give it to a DOS user to extract they will get the following
  194.  error message from PKUNZIP: PKUNZIP you need version 3.6 to 
  195.  decompress this file.  This was an error message that PKWARE
  196.  had left in pkunzip for file systems other than DOS.  We were
  197.  able to use this to let users know that something is wrong
  198.  with the zip file they got from you.  It is nice to offer them
  199.  some sort of error message other than a corrupt zip message.
  200.  
  201.  FULL PKZIP Multiple Volume Support
  202.  ----------------------------------
  203.  Zip Manager now fully supports creating and extracting ALL or 
  204.  SELECTED files from a multiple volume Zip. Due to the way
  205.  that a multiple volume zip is created you MUST place the LAST
  206.  disk in the series in your floppy drive.  The last disk is the
  207.  ONLY one that contains the needed information about all of the
  208.  files contained in the zip file.  Once the files are selected
  209.  pkunzip will prompt you to put in the correct disk number.

  211.  Full Use Of The Registration Database
  212.  ----------------------------------------------
  213.  In order to allow for multiple configurations and in keeping
  214.  with the Win32 API, Zip Manager now makes full use of the
  215.  registration database.
  216.  
  217.  Don't Forget The "Easy Check Out Feature"
  218.  -----------------------------------------
  219.  Since Zip Manager can create a new group for you right frrom the menu
  220.  or allow you to drag a program directly from an archive and drop it
  221.  on any program manager group to add it to that group.  All of these
  222.  features make it very easy to "Check Out" a new program with a minimum
  223.  of effort.  Also remember that all you have to do to "run" a program is
  224.  double click on it in any Zip or Arj file.

  226.  Self Extracting Archive Support
  227.  -------------------------------
  228.  Zip Manager now fully supports self extracting EXE files as normal archive
  229.  files.  You double click on them to open them into the archive pane as you
  230.  would any other Zip or Arj file.  You can then perform any option available
  231.  to archive files on them.
  232.  
  233.  File Re-Naming Support On Extraction
  234.  -----------------------------------
  235.  If Zip Manager encounters a file with the same name when extracting a zip
  236.  file it gives you the option of entering a new file name. Only Zip Manager
  237.  and ARJ offer users this convenient option!
  238.  
  239.  Directory Creation On Extraction
  240.  --------------------------------
  241.  Many users asked for this feature so that they could have a new directory
  242.  created if they wanted to when the Zip file was extracted. Zip Manager
  243.  can even create a multiple level directory.  If for example you entered:
  244.  c:\test1\test2\test3  Zip Manager would create that directory structure
  245.  and extract the files into the test3 sub directory!
  246.  
  247.  Drag and Drop Server
  248.  --------------------
  249.  Version 5 is now a Drag and Drop server, which means that you can drag
  250.  files from Zip Manager and drop them on any program or other file manager
  251.  for Windows to copy, move, or even add them to a program manager group.
  252.  This functionality applies to files in archives and normal files shown
  253.  in the directory pane.
  254.  
  255.  . Dot and .. Double Dot Support
  256.  --------------------------------
  257.  This release supports the . and .. as target directories when creating
  258.  or extracting files.  You can enter a . or a .. in the target directory
  259.  combo box instead of typing in the full directory name.

  261.  Virus Detection Programs
  262.  ------------------------
  263.  Note:  In order for your virus detection program to work with Zip Manager
  264.  it MUST be able to accept command line arguments. Read the users guide
  265.  installation section for instructions on how to determine if your program
  266.  will work with Zip Manager.

  270.  In the Zip Manager Setup Dialog Enter the following after the program
  271.  location name and directory.

  273.  For Example, X:\UTILITIES\NAVW.EXE /auto *.* /S would be the correct
  274.  command for the Norton Anti Virus for Windows Program.

  276.  Listed below are the (sometimes) correct switch parameters for most popular
  277.  virus detection programs. You will most likely still need to experiment a
  278.  little to get some of them to work.  We use and recommend SCAN.EXE from
  279.  McAfee and Associates.
